Writing – Composition
- Develop positive attitudes towards and stamina for writing by writing for different purposes (conveying information)
- Consider what they are going to write before they begin by planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about
- Read aloud what they have written with appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear
- Lay out the different items needed to clean your teeth, without explaining what you are doing. Ask the children what the objects, and what they are used for?
- How would the children explain to someone how to clean their teeth? Choose one child to try and follow the instructions of another child. Repeat several times with different children. What makes the instructions easier to follow? Should the children give lots of long descriptions, or use short sentences? How much information should they include in each step?
- Explain that the children are going to use the writing frames to write the steps that need to be completed for cleaning their teeth.
- At the end of the session share some of the instructions, again having one of the other children act them out to see how easy they are to follow.
- Use the same approach to write instructions for something related to a current topic, or to help parents when their children start school
- Add keywords to the writing frames for support where required.
- Place additional props on the children’s tables so they can physically work through the different steps while writing.
